Who doesn't love lighting a candle (or 20) to get that warm light glowing through your house at night? Candles can create an unmatched ambience - but what if your candles are actually polluting the air in your home?
What are candles made from?
Candles tend to be made from one, or a blend, of four waxes - Soy, Beeswax, Paraffin and Palm.
Most candles are made from the cheap and easy to source Paraffin wax. Whilst they tend to look good, paraffin is made from petroleum and when burning, releases potentially dangerous chemicals into your air. As I'm sure you can imagine, this could have a bad affect on your health.
At Sage and Honey Studio, we use 100% pure soy wax in our jar candles and a house blend of that same soy wax and pure beeswax in our sculpture candles.
Soy wax is an all natural and renewable type of wax, which has the added benefit of burning slower than paraffin due to its cooler burning temperature. When combined with a cotton lead-free wick, you get a much cleaner and safer burn.
Beeswax is also an all natural wax type which, when burning, actually works to clean the air in your home through its production of negative ions, acting as a natural air purifier to help clear any dust, pollen, mould, toxins and odour in the air.
Beware of the term 'blend'
Keep an eye out for any candle brands using the term 'soy blend' or 'beeswax blend'. If they're not disclosing what's in the blend, it's likely they're adding something that they don't want to advertise (usually paraffin!).
What's in Sage + Honey Studio candles?
One of the things I'm most proud of when creating Sage and Honey Studio pairing back the ingredients in our candles to make it one of the cleanest burns on the market, and to ensure that you know exactly what you're putting into the air in your home.
In our jar candles you can expect to see/smell/feel 100% pure soy wax, a lead free cotton wick and a dash of fragrance oil. That's it. Our soy candles are made from all-natural soy wax and has no additives or preservatives, so whilst they can have some lumps and bumps post-burn, we think it's worth the reduced aesthetic appeal to give you a purer burn.
Our sculptural candles contain an in-house blend of locally-sourced 100% pure beeswax and the pure soy used in our jar candles, lead free cotton wicks, a dash of fragrance oil and colour (should you choose a candle with scent and colour, otherwise these two ingredients are excluded!). I use the all-natural, additive free blend of soy and beeswax to help keep the candles at an affordable price range. In saying that, if 100% beeswax candles is something that you're interested in, please let me know and I will look to start stocking it!
